What it’s about:
10 00 p.m.: Lucky is the biggest K-pop star on the scene, and she’s just performed her hit song “Heartbeat” in Hong Kong to thousands of adoring fans. She’s about to debut on The Tonight Show in America, hopefully, a breakout performance for her career. But right now? She’s in her fancy hotel, trying to fall asleep but dying for a hamburger.
11 00 p.m.: Jack is sneaking into a fancy hotel, on assignment for his tabloid job that he keeps secret from his parents. On his way out of the hotel, he runs into a girl wearing slippers, a girl who is single-mindedly determined to find a hamburger. She looks kind of familiar. She’s very cute. He’s maybe curious.
12:00 a.m.: Nothing will ever be the same.
Why I was so excited to read this book:
- Maurene Goo’s writing! She always writes with such humor and then hard-hitting moments of insightfulness. I am ready for another dose of that.
- One of the main character’s is a KPop star! I listen to KPop regularly so I’m interested to see how the author weaves in those bits of information about the music industry and the lives of KPop stars.
- I really love that this feels like a take on that film Roman Holiday (1953) with Audrey Hepburn. I’m really rooting for Lucky and her small acts of freedom and looking forward to seeing how things will unfold with Jack.
- The alternating points of view! I want to hear what both Lucky and Jack are thinking and experiencing in their very different lives, and I like that we get that here.
I just started the book (i.e. 12 chapters in), but I am really enjoying it so far. It’s hitting all the points that I was excited for initially and I am ready to get back to the story.
Carrying on that KPop theme though, I am posting some song suggestions for a solo artist and girl group that I love and listen to often. I know some of you will look at them and roll your eyes, but honestly? These songs never get old for me. They’re still absolute bangers!
