On a Theme: #OwnVoices Romance Novels with Bright Covers

on-a-theme-redesign

I have always been a fan of illustrated covers because I love seeing how the different art styles compliment the description of a book.  Whatever genre or reading audience they’re for, it is interesting seeing the artist’s interpretation.  I’m definitely an art nerd.

What we’ve seen lately are romance novels by #OwnVoices authors that are bright, fun and putting the diverse characters front and center.    I want to highlight them because these are the romance novels I have been hoping to see more of.  Stories featuring culture, family, and women and men of colour – keep them coming.

Well, let’s dig into this list! *finger hearts*

Title:  Get a Life, Chloe Brown (The Brown Sisters #1)
Written by:  Talia Hibbert

What It’s About:  Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

Enjoy a drunken night out.
Ride a motorcycle.
Go camping.
Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
And… do something bad.
But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

Title: Take a Hint, Dani Brown  (The Brown Sisters #2)
Written by: Talia Hibbert

What It’s About:  Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefits—someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When big, brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and former rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact to him, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Suddenly, half the internet is shipping #DrRugbae—and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf is secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.

The easy lay Dani dreamed of is now more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?

Even so, his parents still expect him to end up with a nice Korean girl–which is a problem since Frank is finally dating the girl of his dreams: Brit Means. Brit, who is funny and nerdy just like him. Brit, who makes him laugh like no one else. Brit . . . who is white.

As Frank falls in love for the very first time, he’s forced to confront the fact that while his parents sacrificed everything to raise him in the land of opportunity, their traditional expectations don’t leave a lot of room for him to be a regular American teen. Desperate to be with Brit without his parents finding out, Frank turns to family friend Joy Song, who is in a similar bind. Together, they come up with a plan to help each other and keep their parents off their backs. Frank thinks he’s found the solution to all his problems, but when life throws him a curveball, he’s left wondering whether he ever really knew anything about love—or himself—at all.

This is David Yoon’s debut novel and what a debut it is so far.

This book is a lot of things at once and when I opened this book, I did not expect that.  I expected a simple fake-dating romantic comedy YA novel. I am pleasantly surprised by this.  It is welcomed.

Excuse me.  I have an afternoon set aside to keep reading this book.

Title: Geek Girls Don’t Cry: Real-Life Lessons From Fictional Female Characters
Written by: Andrea Towers

What It’s About:  What does it mean for a woman to be strong—especially in a world where our conception of a “hero” is still so heavily influenced by male characters like Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman? Geek Girls Don’t Cry explores the subject, offering advice tailor-made for fans of any age.

Andrea Towers, who works in public relations at Marvel Entertainment and has written about superheroines for outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, outlines some of the primary traits heroic women can call upon, like resilience, self-acceptance, and bravery, pulling in stories from real-life women as well as figures from the pop-culture pantheon. She also interviews the creators of our favorite fictional heroines, who discuss how they drew from their own experiences to develop these protagonists and how, conversely, their own creations continue to inspire them.

My Thoughts graphic

I will preface this with, I don’t feel like this book is a self-help book.

I think it is more an introduction and conversation starter about topics like trauma, grief, adversity, isolation, and mental health through pop-culture characters.  In this book, we explore the above topics through various familiar characters like Black Widow, Dana Scully, Wonder Woman, Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, Princess Leia, River Tam, Mako Mori, and many more.

Many of us readers and pop culture devourers relate to fictional characters because of their mental health, traumas, and stories of overcoming obstacles.  Either we have experienced those same/or similar things or we have known someone who has.  There is something to be found in that – whether it is understanding or it is the gentle reminder to not give up.  Seeing yourself and seeing hope are two very important things.

What I appreciated about this book was that it outlined each character and how they related to the topic of that chapter but also presented commentary from mental health experts (i.e. Dr. Janina Scarlet, Dr. Amy Saborsky, and Dr. Andrea Letamendi) and research studies.  There’s a section at the end of each character study that summarizes really well, how we can learn from those characters.  Whether it is about lessons in self-care or asking for help or loving yourself or leaning on friends/found family, these are all important things to highlight.

This book is an interesting one and I am hoping more people will discover it and get something out of reading it.

Finished Reading...Reboot

Desi Lee is looking to end her streak of romantic flailures by following a plan laid out for her by countless KDramas.  If it worked out for the girls in those stories then the formula could work for her, right?

This book. This book.  I loved it.  I laughed, I cried, and I stayed up way too late to finish reading it.  Yes, it is over the top but it is the right kind of over the top.  It was sweet and adorable and I think I really needed that at this time.

It’s easy to say that this book is about romance and KDramas but there are these small aspects that really shine through that make it more than that. I liked how we got to know Luca throughout the book in small private ways like how good he was with teaching art to others and how awed and supportive he was of Desi’s interests.  I loved Desi’s father so much and the fact that he loved KDramas and was a true romantic.  I liked Desi’s friends who were hilarious and part of the madness but also, a voice of reason (occasionally).  They felt developed.

When we  finally see Desi really break open to deal with heartbreak, disappointment, and the sadness surrounding her mom, that is when the book went from good to great for me.

Donut Rating 5

And a KPop song suggestion to go with the review! Most Kdramas have their own original soundtracks featuring familiar and big-name Kpop artists.

I love these songs because so many of them are about heartbreak and romance, and the dramatic music videos made for them are just so good.  I have included one below for a great KDrama called While You Were Sleeping.

On a Theme: Historical YA Fiction

on-a-theme-redesign

Historical YA Fiction is such a gem and reveals a story rooted in its time period.  The possibilities with this genre though are endless because while being rooted in the past, you can even mix in a bit of mystery, horror, ghosts, monsters, fantasy, and magic.

I went a little wild with this list because I was so excited as I found more and more books.  I hope that you’ll find something fun to read in this list with whatever mix you enjoy.

What It’s About:  It’s 1944, and World War II is raging across Europe and the Pacific. The war seemed far away from Margot in Iowa and Haruko in Colorado–until they were uprooted to dusty Texas, all because of the places their parents once called home: Germany and Japan.

The teens discover that they are polar opposites in so many ways, except for one that seems to override all the others: the camp is changing them, day by day and piece by piece. Haruko finds herself consumed by fear for her soldier brother and distrust of her father, who she knows is keeping something from her. And Margot is doing everything she can to keep her family whole as her mother”s health deteriorates and her rational, patriotic father becomes a man who distrusts America and fraternizes with Nazis.

With everything around them falling apart, Margot and Haruko find solace in their growing, secret friendship. But in a prison the government has deemed full of spies, can they trust anyone–even each other?
