The Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites from the Lore of H. P. Lovecraft

Title: The Necronomnomnom: Recipes and Rites from the Lore of H. P. Lovecraft
Written by: Mike Slater

What It’s About: A Lovecraft-inspired cookbook with recipes to whet your appetite and threaten your sanity

Reading about the slime- covered, non- Euclidean ruins of the sunken city of R’lyeh or the squamous, tentacled deity who slumbers there would make anyone hungry. Starting with the puns and working from there, authors Mike Slater and Thomas Roache have summoned forth 50 funny, bizarre, and horrible dishes such as:

• The Deep Fried Deep One
• Nog Sothoth
• Cthus-Koos
• The Great Old Buns
• The Gin and Miskatonic

Like H. P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon, the legendary and forbidden book of the dead that is “alien to all sane and balanced readers,” this cookbook contains many dark (but still delicious) secrets within its pages. The book comes infested with sanity- melting and mouth- watering illustrations, as well as annotations full of crazed discoveries and desperate warnings about the recipes that brave readers will undertake.

On a Theme: YA Holiday Novels

If you’ve been in a car lately, you’ve probably started to hear Christmas songs on the radio. It feels almost too soon since we just said goodbye to the month of Halloween.

However, it’s about spreading cheer now and feeling cozy and focusing on time with those you live with. It’s a strange time, no doubt, but there’s room to make the most of our connections and find new ways to connect with those we care about.

This On a Theme post will focus on some holiday-related reads. Hoping they inject some cheer into the upcoming weeks before the holidays truly arrive.

Title: 10 Blind Dates
Written by: Ashley Elston

What It’s About: Sophie wants one thing for Christmas-a little freedom from her overprotective parents. So when they decide to spend Christmas in South Louisiana with her very pregnant older sister, Sophie is looking forward to some much needed private (read: make-out) time with her long-term boyfriend, Griffin. Except it turns out that Griffin wants a little freedom from their relationship.

Heartbroken, Sophie flees to her grandparents” house, where the rest of her boisterous extended family is gathered for the holiday. That”s when her nonna devises a (not so) brilliant plan: Over the next ten days, Sophie will be set up on ten different blind dates by different family members. Like her sweet cousin Sara, who sets her up with a hot guy at an exclusive underground party. Or her crazy aunt Patrice, who signs Sophie up for a lead role in a living nativity. With a boy who barely reaches her shoulder. And a screaming baby.

When Griffin turns up unexpectedly and begs for a second chance, Sophie feels more confused than ever. Because maybe, just maybe, she”s started to have feelings for someone else . . . Someone who is definitely not available.

This is going to be the worst Christmas break ever . . . or is it?

Title: One Way or Another
Written by: Kara McDowell

What It’s About: The average person makes 35,000 decisions every single day. That”s about 34,999 too many for Paige Collins, who lives in debilitating fear of making the wrong choice. The simple act of picking an art elective is enough to send her into a spiral of what-ifs. What if she’s destined to be a famous ceramicist but wastes her talent in drama club? What if there’s a carbon monoxide leak in the ceramics studio and everyone drops dead? (Grim, but possible!)

That’s why when Paige is presented with two last-minute options for Christmas vacation, she’s paralyzed by indecision. Should she go with her best friend (and longtime crush) Fitz to his family’s romantic mountain cabin? Or should she accompany her mom to New York, a city Paige has spent her whole life dreaming about? Just when it seems like Paige will crack from the pressure of choosing, fate steps in — in the form of a slippery grocery store floor — and Paige’s life splits into two very different parallel paths. One path leads to New York where Paige falls for the city . . . and the charms of her unexpected tour guide. The other leads to the mountains where Paige might finally get her chance with Fitz . . . until her anxiety threatens to ruin everything. However, before Paige gets her happy ending in either destiny, she’ll have to face the truth about her struggle with anxiety — and learn that you don’t have to be “perfect” to deserve true love.

As you have noticed, I’m on a bit of a vampire downward spiral. No, I haven’t resorted to watching Dracula 2000, which is an awful film. I’m just reading a lot of vampire stories.

I am 3 stories in and wow, I have to say…Rebecca Roanhorse’s story is very very VERY good. I’m still sitting here thinking about it. It gave me the spooks (thank you) and the story was so fascinating (thank you, again). It made me almost sad that it wasn’t expanded into a larger story.

I have a good chunk of the book still left to read, but I’m calling it a night. For now.

Future Reads: KPop in YA Part 2

When I put up my first Future Reads post about Kpop YA novels, I did not think I would be back again with more books so soon. Wow. Wow.
