On a Theme: YA Novels featuring Cheerleaders

Cheerleading wasn’t really a thing for my school since we didn’t really have any sports teams besides softball and volleyball. However, I did intensely love the movie Bring It On (I knew so much of the dialogue by heart) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Ugh, Joss Whedon, you suck).

I wasn’t really into the cheers but more the choreography because it was, essentially, dance and gymnastics. I really loved the movement and teamwork of it all.

This On a Theme post then will be about YA Novels that feature cheerleaders and cheerleading. Let’s all cartwheel into this post with some enthusiasm. But safely though!

Title: The Falling Girls
Written by: Hayley Krischer

What It’s About: Shade and Jadis are everything to each other. They share clothes, toothbrushes, and even matching stick-and-poke tattoos. So when Shade unexpectedly joins the cheerleading team, Jadis can hardly recognize who her best friend is becoming.

Shade loves the idea of falling into a group of girls; she loves the discipline it takes to push her body to the limits alongside these athletes . Most of all, Shade finds herself drawn to The Three Chloes—the insufferable trio that rules the squad—including the enigmatic cheer captain whose dark side is as compelling as it is alarming.

Jadis won’t give Shade up so easily, though, and the pull between her old best friend and her new teammates takes a toll on Shade as she tries to forge her own path. So when one of the cheerleaders dies under mysterious circumstances, Shade is determined to get to the bottom of her death. Because she knows Jadis—and if her friend is responsible, doesn’t that mean she is, too?

In this compelling, nuanced exploration of the layered, intoxicating relationships between teen girls, and all the darkness and light that exists between them, novelist Hayley Krischer weaves a story of loss and betrayal, and the deep reverberations felt at a friendship’s breaking point.

Note: This book is also coming out on October 5, 2021. This novel looks like it is about those relationship between teammates and girls with maybe a dash of mystery? It has me interested.

On a Theme: Sports fiction for YA Readers

Sports! I have never been on a team or dedicated myself much to organized sports beyond watching figure skating, rooting for the national teams during the Olympics, and playing badminton with friends at the park during the summer.

It is interesting to me though the camraderie and connection to be found between team members to achieve a goal, the love of the sport, the dedication to improving your skills, and what happens when we link our identities with a sport.

This On a Theme post is dedicated to those books and graphic novels featuring teens in sports. It sort of goes without saying that I wanted to really include books in this list where female characters are the ones playing the sport, because we are so often treated as less, even when playing the same sport and bringing the trophy home.

Things only get more complicated when she finds hidden letters from her birth father. Alex can’t stop asking questions. Does she really fit in with her family? What would it be like to go to a black hairdresser? Should she contact her birth father, despite the fact that it might devastate her parents? Meanwhile, her body is changing, and Alex isn’t sure she can keep up with her teammates. Title: Catfulness: A Cat’s Guide to Achieving Mindfulness
Written by: A Cat

What It’s About: Human beings love to create problems for themselves. I observe this on a daily basis, as do all my feline friends. They never stop, and one of their favorite tasks is to find more tasks to do. They are always looking for something, as if the life they have isn’t enough. They say they are looking for happiness–but do they know what happiness is?
We cats know the art of living. We eat when we’re hungry, sleep when we’re tired. Sitting for hours outside a mouse hole has taught us patience. Staring at an aquarium has brought us meditation. And we know how to please ourselves.

Catfulness is a seven-week mindfulness program for human beings. If they can live their lives more like us, the world will be more serene. As Sigmund Freud said, “time spent with cats is never wasted”.

Title: Nubia: Real One
Written by: L.L. McKinney
Illustrated by: Robyn Smith

What It’s About: Can you be a hero…if society doesn’t see you as a person?

Nubia has always been a little bit…different. As a baby she showcased Amazonian strength by pushing over a tree to rescue her neighbor’s cat. But, despite Nubia’s similar abilities, the world has no problem telling her that she’s no Wonder Woman. And even if she was, they wouldn’t want her. Every time she comes to the rescue, she’s reminded of how people see her: as a threat. Her moms do their best to keep her safe, but Nubia can’t deny the fire within her, even if she’s a little awkward about it sometimes. Even if it means people assume the worst.

When Nubia’s best friend, Quisha, is threatened by a boy who thinks he owns the town, Nubia will risk it all—her safety, her home, and her crush on that cute kid in English class—to become the hero society tells her she isn’t.

Note: This title is already out and was released on February 23, 2021. I need to get my hands on this one as soon as possible. The description alone has me very interested.

Spotlight: Not Your Idol Manga Series

In this Spotlight post, I will be discussing a new manga series called Not Your Idol by Aoi Makino.

I have to mention that this is a dark series and when it was announced for licensing by Shojo Beat, I was quite surprised. If you’ve picked up any of the other titles of the Shojo Beat line, in tone, this one is drastically different. I was used to the romantic comedies and nostalgic high school dramas so this one settled like a ton of bricks .

I am going to mention some items that all readers should know about going into reading this manga, especially if the content is a dealbreaker for them.

Trigger warnings (TW) for Not Your Idol include: sexual assault, violence against women, stalking, PTSD.

Title: Not Your Idol Vol. 1
Written and drawn by: Aoi Makino

What It’s About: After that day, she stopped being a girl.

In the wake of an assault, Nina Kamiyama, a former idol in the group Pure Club, shuns her femininity and starts dressing as a boy. At high school she keeps to herself, but fellow student Hikaru Horiuchi realizes who she is. What secrets is she keeping? The shocking drama starts.

Title: Not Your Idol Vol. 2
Written and drawn by: Aoi Makino

What It’s About: Heartbroken Nina Kamiyama is a former idol. She’s decided to keep her past identity a secret for her personal safety, but the dangerous situation intensifies when another discovers who she really is. Who can she trust?

I am highlighting this series because while heavy, it brings up topics I feel need more focus like the problematic aspects of the idol system, how young girls interact with femininity and misogyny, and how trauma can change a person. I do listen to Kpop a lot but I am also very aware of the realities the young women and men face in that industry and some of the dangers as well.

The characters are interesting and infuriating and the pace of the story is okay so far. I am very interested in Nina Kamiyama learning to grow and define herself away from the idol persona. I’m invested in her healing and the thoughts she voices are pretty powerful. With a mystery, you want everything at once but this one is taking a bit more time to ask those hard hitting questions of its readers.

While I think bringing up these topics are important, especially centered around current Japanese culture, I do believe that the structure of the story, character development, and their execution will matter most in judging the series as a whole. The series is currently on hiatus so I don’t know when volume 3 will arrive. It feels like the series is at a tipping point and I am wary of it. It could either be a needed commentary on society or it could devolve into a painful and offensive mess. Right now, I am giving it the below rating as I am a bit stuck on how to rate it without getting the full picture of this series and where it is going.

Let’s see what happens.

Finished Reading: Fangirl Vol. 1

What It’s About: Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, everybody is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath just can’t let go…

Cath doesn’t need friends IRL. She has her twin sister, Wren, and she’s a popular fanfic writer in the Simon Snow community with thousands of fans online. But now that she’s in college, Cath is completely outside of her comfort zone. There are suddenly all these new people in her life. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming boyfriend, a writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome new writing partner…

And she’s barely heard from Wren all semester!

Fangirl Vol.1 begins with Cath moving into her college dorm, meeting her roommate (very briefly), meeting her roommate’s sort of boyfriend (very uncmofortably), and making her dorm room a bit more like home. This means spreading her love of the Simon Snow book series all over her side of the dorm. We meet Cath here and are immediately introduced to her fears, her sadness, and her passion for writing.

Cath is so incredibly human. Her anxieties are very real, and I think a lot of readers will understand the way she acts and reacts. This first volume is an introduction to her journey – where she’s figuring out the kind of writer she is, where she fits in without her twin sister Wren, and how she can interact with those around her who want to know her.

I feel like a manga was the perfect form for this novel to take as a graphic work because it feels like the perfect setup for a shoujo manga. A girl on a whirlwind of a journey through love and life. Gabi Nam’s art is so good in bringing that to life from the Simon Snow fanfic snippets to Cath’s reactions to various scenarios. Manga is very expressive that way and doesn’t shy away from showing or stirring emotions. I’m a big manga reader so this was definitely on my list as soon as it was announced.

Sam Magg’s adpation is very well done. It flows well and captures essential moments that drive the story and build Cath’s character. I don’t feel like anything included felt out of place or like filler. Sam Magg’s is also a fantastic writer so I knew that the end result would be good.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I have never actually read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Reading the first volume of the Fangirl manga series makes me want to pick up the novel. I want to read all those details that didn’t make it into this adpatation and see how Cath is described there. I think I just might do that too.

I will also be checking out Volume 2 of the manga series whenever it magically appears.

Currently Reading: Fangirl Vol. 1

What It’s About:

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, everybody is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath just can’t let go…

She’s got a surly roommate with a charming boyfriend, a writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome new writing partner…

And she’s barely heard from Wren all semester!

Let me start out by sharing that I have not read the original novel by Rainbow Rowell that this manga is adapting. The only novel by Rowell that I have read is Carry On. So I have some Simon Snow knowledge.

First, the art is really good. I love how every character looks from Cath to Reagan to Levi. The art is really well done. I’m glad this graphic novel has introduced me to Gabi Nam. I hope to see more from her work in the future.

I’m really liking this one so far despite being unfamiliar with the overall story before picking it up. I really enjoy Sam Maggs so I trust her when her name is attached to something. I feel like Cath is an incredibly relateable character, including her love for Simon Snow. It reminds me of my own love for Harry Potter when I was younger.

I’m most of the way through this and hope to have it finished very very soon!

But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

It didn’t even matter that Tara was a princess… until one day it very much did matter, and Pan had to say goodbye forever. Years later, when a charismatic pair of off-world gladiators show up on her doorstep, she finds that life may not be as small as she thought. On the run and off the galactic grid, Pan discovers the astonishing secrets of her neo-medieval world… and the intoxicating possibility of burning it all down.
